About the Judge
James C. Varnum is an experimental painter. He studied art in both Boston and San Francisco, and holds a B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute and a M.S. in Communication Disorders from Emerson College. After retirement from the field of education, James is now an active artist in Newton, MA with memberships in multiple art associations, galleries, and actively exhibits his artwork in the area.
James experiments with watercolor, alcohol inks, and liquid graphite. His paintings are combinations of layered colors, movements and various textures on traditional watercolor papers and on substrates such as Yupo and Terra-Skin. He uses a variety of materials to create texture, then moves the pigment with various tools, and finally adds lines and marks with ink and/or graphite.
