FEBRUARY 2024
While our themed exhibit “Winter Warmth” is on view at Gorse Mill this month, we will be hosting a series of member-led demos in the gallery. We hope you can join us for these more informal and intimate gatherings where our members will share aspects of their artistic practice. These demos are all free and open to the public.
Gorse Mill Studios is located at 31 Thorpe Road in Needham.
Intro to Encaustic with Hilary Hanson Bruel
Thursday, February 15, 3:00pm
Hilary will share some of the basics of working with encaustic paint, and will demonstrate the techniques she uses to achieve transparency and texture in her work.
Oil on Paper with Mark J. Richards
Thursday, February 22, 3:00pm
Mark will demonstrate oil painting on paper. The liquid use of color gives transparency and variety to the paper’s surface. Creating small paintings with the benefit of watercolor techniques gives these works vibrancy and immediacy. He will have samples of Strathmore and Arches paper for comparison.
Watercolor in Action with Nancy Levin
Sunday, February 25, 12:30pm
This will not be a demo on “how” to paint a watercolor painting, but instead will focus on the “what ifs” that happen when you apply different “types” of watercolor paint together, alone, or side-by-side.
Do the paints move and readily meld together? Is one paint thick and more immobile, i.e. “just sit there”? If one paint granulates, what happens to the other that you want to mix with it? Does one paint disperse faster and just burst into the one next to it if the sides touch just a little?
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own painting supplies and experiment along with Nancy. Please bring any watercolor paints, watercolor paper or sketching paper, and brushes that you already have at home.
