Ms. Varón, born and raised in Peru, is a watercolor and pastel artist, now based in Needham, Massachusetts. She has a studio in Wickford, Rhode Island. As a child in Lima, Ms. Varón demonstrated a natural ability with watercolors as this was her first exposure to art as a child by her British art teacher, but she was never encouraged to pursue painting professionally. She studied with local, well known artists like Elena Vaccari among others, and later attended college in the United States in order to pursue a degree in Art and continue her education at the Museum School of Art in Boston where she studied under watercolor media Master Kaji Aso. A degree from the New England School of Art and Design/ Suffolk University in Space Planning and Design followed.
She practiced Interior Design for over 27 years and owned her own design studio working with local designers and architects. Ms. Varón has lived in Nicaragua and Guatemala as well, here she was exposed to talented artists who, although they had limited resources, preferred watercolor for their media because they were more economical and portable and the pigments could be made locally from natural dyes and the paintings dried quickly. They were also able to make their own hand made watercolor papers from rags that when wet, were pressed into the dirt or asphalt streets to create the bumpy textures like the expensive and imported papers which were out of their reach. The clear message was to paint, create, and persist no matter what the circumstances and with whatever resources one may have. Ms. Varón has a tenaciously fluid style in her watercolors; allowing the paper, water and the pigment to take the subject and viewer where it wants to go.
