Needham Art Association hosts demonstrations and educational programs on the first Tuesday of the month (unless otherwise noted.) These programs are free and open to the public, though registration may sometimes be required for non-members. This year all events will be hosted at the Needham Free Public Library except for the virtual tour in January and our joint program with Wellesley Society of Artists in April.
April Program
Nancy Friese – Water-Based Painting in View of Nature: Materials, Methods and Practice
Saturday, April 5, 1:30pm
Wellesley Free Library
For this year’s joint artist program with the Wellesley Society of Artists, we are pleased to welcome Nancy Friese for a three-part workshop. First Nancy will provide an overview of the different basic qualities of watercolor, gouache and acrylic water media painting and drawing materials. Attendees may create small sampler sheets of each as takeaways. There will then be a short demonstration about the additive and subtractive methods of building a composition including working wet over dry, broad to detail, light to dark, and a whole-surface touch. Nancy will then show us some of her finished paintings done from observation, sharing her tips for working in open-view of nature. Participants may bring one small piece of their own to share as an ending.
Nancy Friese is a painter-printmaker who works in open-air. Her paintings and prints have been exhibited in over 30 solo shows and 170 group shows nationally and internationally, and are in 50 corporate and museum collections and over 100 private collections. Friese was elected as a National Academician in the National Academy of Design in New York and received two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and the Japan-US Friendship Commission Creative Artist Fellowship. Her paintings, prints and drawings are represented by Cade Tompkins Projects. Friese is a full professor at Rhode Island School of Design.
